Several years ago, I was given a wonderful assignment from a blog titled “Inspire Me Today,” which asked its contributors the following question “If you only had 500 words to share, what wisdom would you want to pass on to humanity? What have you learned that matters, and what doesn’t?”


I wrote the following on the day of the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting (to see the published version, go here). Though it’s been more than a decade since I wrote it, it remains profoundly important to me—I see it as a personal manifesto of sorts, and it stands as perhaps the best introduction of who I am and what I believe in.
